So why do we think so little of their everyday presence? Since childhood, Cynthia Fan has made plants her life's work – scientifically studying, artistically arranging, and simply obsessing over their surprising quirks and nature. In this, her debut collection of plant writing, Fan ponders the most profound questions of plant life – What exactly is a leaf? How does a plant think? – by delving into her own, as well as the world around her, whether it be in the South Africa of her birth, the China of her ancestors, or the blustery Britain in which she works today.

Accompanied by her own photos and sculptural arrangements, Fan finds both plants and people in a constant dance of deception and adaptation, inviting her readers to marvel at the true fluidity of biology, the supremacy of serendipity, and the porous boundaries between self and environment.

About Cynthia Fan Cynthia Fan is an artist and researcher with a background in plant science and floristry. She holds a PhD in plant molecular biology from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh, and is one half of Pear_ed collective which spends time with plants between Cape Town, London and Amsterdam. As a contributing writer for The Plant and a former artist-in-residence at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York City, her work reflects an ongoing relationship with the plants around her.

About Anne Daffertshofer Dr Anne Daffertshofer is an art historian, writer and curator working between Fife and Berlin. Her research explores how contemporary art history can challenge anthropocentric paradigms and illuminate the entanglements between human and more-than-human life.

Most recently, Anne was Art and Cultural Programmes Curator at St Andrews Botanic Garden, where she worked with national and international artists and creative practitioners to develop exhibitions, multidisciplinary events and writing that opened space for critical reflection on contemporary conditions and speculative futures, while pushing back against hegemonic narratives of past, present and what might yet be possible. Her independent practice continues at the intersection of contemporary art, eco-critical theory and creative fields including cooking, literature, film, performance and oral storytelling. She is currently developing collaborative engagement projects and new research and writing, both academic and non-academic.

Anne is the co-curator of On Paradise, an international group exhibition at Villa Schoeningen (31 May – 23 August 2026). Bringing together artists from across six centuries, the exhibition takes as its central question: where has the idea of Paradise led us, historically, spiritually, societally?
